Why Alaska?

In the last six years, I've driven around most of the United States on two trans-continental road trips.

I first traveled for three weeks alone on the Mother Road: Route 66 from Chicago to Santa Monica. I spent the next week visiting friends in California and Colorado. For the final week of my first life-changing trip, my mother flew out to meet me and we drove quickly back from Albuquerque to New Hampshire.

My second adventure occured when I moved to Seattle. For another four weeks, I traveled down the East Coast, across the South, and finally up the West Coast. I was by myself for more than half that time.

Two years ago, I decided that I would finish driving through the continental United States (by myself) by the time I was 30. I had about eight states left.

Six months ago, I decided that I would visit all of the United States (mostly by myself) by the time I was 30. I had about ten states left.

In the early fall, I'll complete my last road trip of my 20's, making a loop from Seattle to Chicago, hitting all of the states in between, the only ones I haven't been to.

In November, I will turn 30 in Hawaii. Hopefully, such a vacation will help ease me into my next decade.

And for right now?

Right now, I am in Alaska. Working in Alaska. Living in Alaska. Exploring Alaska. Attempting to sleep in the almost consistent daylight of Alaska. Enjoying Alaska.

My name is Kat, but during this time in the 49th state, I mostly go by Zest. I combined my love/desire/need for working at summer camp, with my love/desire/need for visiting someplace new. And I haven't regretted a second of it.

Except for the slow wi-fi.

Join me on my adventure!
